Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several key factors account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. However, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
